Modernization of m/v Kapitan Shiryagin

In summer 2012 PJSC “Dunaisudoremont” along with «Ship Repair Enterprise «Danube Ship-Service» LLC. and in cooperation with the company “Valship” had started modernization process of the dry cargo ship “Kapitan Shiryagin”.

Modernization process involves:

The ship hull is cross-cut around 74-75 frame timber. A newly-made cylindrical hull insert 44,2 meters long(68 spaces) is installed into this area. Additionally, the hold height is increased via enlarging the height of the inner shipboards in the existing hull by side coamings extension, and in new cylindrical insert – by installing the inner boards on the main deck. Upper deck from tank to quarter deck long is installed at the altitude of 2500 mm from the existing main deck. Upper deck and main deck are connected via vertical cross-over enclosure. Longitudinal and crossover coamings of hold compartments are installed at the upper deck. The upper deck is supported by pillers installed at a distance of not more than 8 frame-spacings and the side plates with a set, installed in the plane of the outer boards of cross-decks, located at the upper deck level. The modernization process also involves the manufacturing of hatch covers with hydraulic opening system. A large amount of work is required to provide a vessel with new cable routes and to upgrade the drainage systems, ballast, fire, carbon dioxide and hold and ballast compartment ventilation systems.

For the past period, PJSC “Dunaisudoremont” had manufactured semi-bulk sections of vessel sides and bilge, which were later on delivered on building berth of the «Ship Repair Enterprise «Danube Ship-Service» LLC., based upon floating dock with handling capacity of up to 2500 tons.

As for now, we are finishing shipyard fitting of cylindrical insert, which will be later fitted up with ballast and drainage systems, plugged at both ends, and then floated and dragged off to “Dunaisudoremont” to complete cutting-in to ship hull.

Stacking process included:

  • Consistent installation of twelve bottom semi-volume sections in order provided set in construction documentation, followed by section pinning, joining and welding.
  • Installation and welding of eight half-volume sections with subsequent welding.
  • Assembling trunk pipelines for drainage and ballast systems.
  • Installation and welding of plugs on the ends of cylindrical insert.
  • Set-up of temporary struts to send a manufactured item to shipyard where the cylindrical insert was cut- in into ship hull.
